PET/CT detects arterial plaques that cause heart attack

F-18 NaF PET/CT imaging may help identify patients at high risk of heart attack, according to a new study led by University of Edinburgh scientists. Eighty high-risk patients who had experienced a heart attack or angina underwent scans, which pinpointed blockages in 90% of heart attack patients and 40% of angina patients, according to the study published in The Lancet. "If we are now able to identify patients at highest risk of having a heart attack, we could possibly take steps to prevent this catastrophic event. This could fundamentally change the way we approach and manage these patients, reducing their risk of a future heart attack," said Dr. Nik Joshi.
